What should be do about the "Status" field?

  1. Relabel "Status" as Scanlation Status (9 votes [56.25%] - View)

    Percentage of vote: 56.25%

  2. Add a second status, so that one is for Scanlation Status and the other for Completion of the comic on Batoto (5 votes [31.25%] - View)

So, as I have mentioned in an earlier discussion about "Status" of a comic in another topic, the meaning of "Status" is unclear, and causing trouble for readers.

As far as I understand it to be, "Status" is supposed to represent Scanlation Status. However, many people are understanding it to be one of two other things:
  • Status of the comic on Batoto
  • Status of the comic in its home country

The former is no problem, because if you have it completely on Batoto, then it is assuredly completely scanlated. However, the latter is a large problem. There are plenty of people who want to continue reading a comic, only to go to MangaUpdates and find out that it is not completely scanlated, because someone put "Complete" because it was finished in Japan.

Whoever wrote the description even points out the fact that you can't find all of the volumes scanlated, which puts emphasis on the ignorance of the meaning of Status on the behalf of whoever set the status for that comic.

I make this topic, because I would like something to be done about this sooner rather than later. All of the discussion about this so far have taken place in topics that did not specifically concern themselves with this issue, and since nothing has been done about it despite the discussion, I decided to create this topic as a correct place for this discussion and also to hopefully garner action with regards to this subject.

Please feel free to suggest any alternatives I have not listed in the poll.

well, I suppose it's fine. I voted for option 1 anyway, my stand about this hasn't changed. Just curious, but is this something that Trebor can change as well or is it only grumpy?

I vote for 1. Because all (if not self-published title) comics here are scanlations, it's much more make sense if the status represent scanlation status.
And for Switch, I guess someone put it as "Complete" because someone scanned the English publisher's version of the latter volumes. You can found them on some forum. So yeah, there are online version of them, although not scanlation. I think people confuse scanlation and these scans.

There are some cases like this, and even on MU, they are labeled as completely scanlated, although the fact is it just scans of official prints.
Well, I change the status of Switch to 'ongoing', since although there are online version, they're not scanlation.

It's true that almost all comics on Batoto currently are scanlations. However, Batoto does keep itself open to self-publishing comics like webcomics, does it not? In that case, I see great use in having a status that represents whether the comic itself is finished on Batoto.

At first, I figured that if it could be managed, I wouldn't mind two statuses, one for "Scanlation status" and one for "Series status". But then again, it's a tad unnecessary: If a series' Scanlation status is complete, then it's pretty obvious that the Series status is as well, and vice versa - if the Series status is ongoing, the Scanlation status is, too. The only instance where two statuses would be of interest is if the series is complete and the scanlations aren't, but even then, I don't think there are that many who care about it; what they likely want to know is if the series is completely scanlated or not.

So yeah, my vote would be to label it "Scanlation status".

As a site that caters to scanlated manga rather than the raw, the first option seems most relevant.

It seems I didn't word my post well, sorry. I know batoto also cater self-published comic such as web-comic, but I still think having two statuses is a bit redundant. For example, a self-published title and the artist upload it by himself, when it said 'complete', I think people will automatically acknowledge it as complete here... eh, I know it doesn't worded well, but I hope my post make sense.
Also, I think what majority of people care more is whether a series completely scanlated or not, so I'll stick to first option.

Most useful option for me would be 1, this is a scanlations site so I want to know the scanlation status. However this method can be a problem if a group has done some volumes of a manga and doesn't want it hosted here. While the series might be completely translated it wouldn't be complete. But since this is a online reader people should look up additional info on sites like mangaupdates.

I mean, IMHO, the most important feature for a manga reader would be to list the completion of the comic on the site, which is where the people who came to the site are intending to read it. You can always use the "go check MangaUpdates" argument to figure out if it is completely scanlated.

if you say for the persons who come to read it to the page, u are speaking about english, german, spanish, turky, or which of the multible languages some series are released and sometimes english is not the furthest

True, but you could tie status to language rather than the comic.

i like to know both statuses
this is because if i like a scanlation that is still ongoing, i'll often go looking for raws
but there's not much point in doing that if the series isn't yet completed in it's land of origin

if i have to choose one, i'd go for the status of the comic itself, and not the scanlation
this is because if a scanlation is completed, it will usually be marked on the last chapter which is the topmost on the huge list
so not difficult to find out whether all chapters are on batoto, and there are links to whichever scanlation group it is that works on it

However, having the last chapter does not always mean that it is complete on Batoto. There have been plenty of manga on Batoto that have the end of the series uploaded, but not the whole series, whether it's because of Scanlator upload policy or due to the contributor not having certain chapters.

i know about that. but usually when a series' end is scanlated, the rest is too
so if yo see the end, you could just look for it elsewhere
if chapters are missing due to scanlator policies, you wouldn't find it on batoto anyway

and these are reasons why it would be better to have more than one status. series status and batoto status (for each language) would probably be the best here

not that it matters all that much to me. i'd find the information i want anyway. but i'd definitely give all the information i have if i got a chance to do so
