Sadly I was too poor to afford playing the games back then (horrible player on MUGEN).
I've always watched in arcades and read part of the series back in 98 .
Although my memory is fuzzy, KOF story really sucks you in.
I quickly became fond of each character and their development (Iori and Kyo so badass man, Rock and Terry storyline was quite interesting as well).
Maybe one day the manga would be translated here on Batoto.
Here is a random video with KOF that I found awhile ago. Hope you would enjoy it while you are waiting for the true players/fans.

I love it when Kyo and K' has their own speech interaction before fighting, it was damn cool.
I don't really play random mugen. The version i played was chinese mugen called Mugen Omega Garou which sort of covers bits of Rock's story for fatal fury and mark of the wolves. I downloaded characters from Claudio Toxi but the site close down. All of the characters data was KOF, they also had a pretty solid combat system.
Of course the story and the gameplay is not nearly as good as the real thing but that was all I could afford back then XD.

I remember Vice and Mature were prettycheap good to use. I seriously can't combo or use benimaru nor clark very well orz.

I love the thirteenth one. Downloaded the demo on my Xbox and played it so much that I went to the marketplace and bought KOF 2002 UM on the XBL arcade. So much fun, I think my favorite team has to be Iori, Blue Mary, and either King or Nameless.

i've never played with Nameless, but from what i've seen, he's like a clone of K9999 and k'.I love the thirteenth one. KOF 2002 UM is the best version ever, it has all the players ever seen.

The new gen installment was pretty damn good. I love playing as K' or Ash for the most part, but I experiment with others sometimes.
