'Arts' genre

If this is an old refused suggestion, then sorry.

Ok, I think that an 'arts' genre tag should be nice and useful. You know, there are those countless music manga and some photography and painting/drawing stuff on anothers. When I see these manga's genre tags (e.g. Bakuman), I always think 'there are stuff missing here'.

That's just it. Thank you.

You can select type: artbook. I don't think art is really a genre, since all manga is art.

edit: posted to fast, seems you weren't exactly looking for artbooks but for manga that deal with arts. I guess a tag for that would be kind of useful, yes.
Batoto seems to have these standard tags, which you see on every manga site though. I think they are mostly derived from mangaupdates, so coming up with new tags would mean a good deal of extra effort probably.

That sounds more like some sort of category to me then an actual genre.

genre: "a. A category of artistic composition, as in music or literature, marked by a distinctive style, form, or content" http://www.thefreedictionary.com/genre

Most of the genre which are tagged here aren't usually referred to as genre though, like "smut", "adventure" or "action".

Not sure what you are trying to say vimes123, so I'll just interpret this as a question directed towards me elaborate what I said.

A 'genre' is a certain type category, it's classified based on several stylistic criteria. Like your definition says it has to be 'distinctive', and I am of the opinion that 'arts' can be used too broadly to fit into the category of 'genre'.

Genres are created by convention and to my knowledge 'adventure' and 'action' are very common and aren't confined to the manga/comic community. (You could argue about 'smut' though.)

I'm not sure there is really an official difference between genres and categories.
This manga belong to the shonen genre, this manga belongs to the shonen category... that sounds pretty much the same to me. But I guess mangaupdate used genre for the most used tags and categories to refine the search.
That's make me think, is there a way to search manga by genre/category here on batoto ? I couldn't find it.

Actually we users can edit the "genres" (we can call them this, right?) of any manga. This way we can "fix" whatever doesn't seems right, yet some people may fuck up the genre tags of any manga.
Just like this http://i42.tinypic.com/fdu2yo.png

And the discussion here is not about what is and what isn't a genre. Stop please.

Something to consider: isn't "martial arts" an arts subgenre?

Hmmmm maybe, it's just like yaoi/yuri and romance. But if you think about a manga about various fighters, "Arts" looks strange.

But whatever, having more genre tags just improves the search and 'categorization' (or wtv) of a manga.

Yes... those random people who insist in their silly minds that shounen ai is in fact yaoi :( oddly enough it doesn't happen on mu xD

from what I see the genre section here is based off MU's genre options, so I don't think it really is necessary to change. By adding in an arts genre it's going to make things a little confusing, it'd be better to add something like 'arts' category (aka a while new category section like that of mangaupdates) but then again that might just make things really confusing. Overall it'd probably be useful but it's probably not such an urgent need.

Favorite Manga: Record of Fallen Vampire, Hayate the Combat Butler, Kekkaishi
Main reason: Akabara Strauss and plot/story flow, Tennousu Athena arc/Katsura Hinagiku, Kidoin Nura and story flow

Yes, it's not urgent at all. But come on, it would be nice. It's way more useful than 'Mecha' genre for example...
And IMO, making a category section is just too troublesome.

you could make a list of qualifying manga and if its long enough that would mean its significant probably.

No, no, I never saw any manga like that, happily. It was really just a suposition. But the "fix" part happened a couple of times with me.

but but but but but but but but what about my suggestion? ):

I don't really see much of it's usefulness and potential vast mis-usage. Arts is quite vague, are you suggesting a category for fine arts? literary arts? art awards? comics that talk about art? I'm not even sure what comic would go under "art" other than artbooks.

Bakuman, Mangaka-san to Assistant-san to, Chanto Kaitemasu kara!, Comic Party, G Edition (creation of manga)
Beck, Nana (music)
24 colors - Hatsukoi no Palette, Pink Lady (painting/drawing)
Addicted to curry (cooking)
Paradise Kiss (designing clothes)

other manga about music (a list I found somewhere):

@vimes123 Dude, I was starting my post and then comes the 'new message' pop-up. And then "WOW". You're a hero.

@Grumpy Hm, yeah, thinking now I can really see that 'arts' is a little vague. But then, a "Music" and "Painting/Drawing" genre (just a example) would kinda ignore other type of arts.

I kind of really like this idea. I think Alrei means Fine Arts. And I would love a Fine Arts Genre.

"Fine art or the fine arts encompass art forms developed primarily for aesthetics and/or concept rather than practical application." -- Wikipedia

PS Wood Stock would be under this category too.
