I'm quite pleased to see a Eichan and Nacchan encounter so soon after the Florida arc. But this dose of teenage angsty tension means that we have a whole lotta tennis coming up soon. I wonder what challenge he's gonna face next.

Note: Baby Steps will be releasing once a week on Monday for a while, until iMangascans gets its translator back from vacation

Really enjoying how this is manga is going. It's not over the top crazy like the other tennis mangas, so it's nice to see your main character gradually get better while overcoming several obstacles.

EI-chan gonna lose to Takuma >.<

I wish Ei-chan gets a special move except his control its getting boring him doing the same thing over and over again...

Nxt hes gonna divide the court by 17342 parts. Lmao :D

Yeah I think it's gonna build towards his "special" skill but the whole draw of the manga and character is how his hard work and consistency beat all. I'm still dubious about the whole 64 parts thing though. Not sure how many play tennis here but that is INSANE accuracy, especially when in a real game. I'm no tennis pro, but 9 parts is my limit haha. Still. It could of been 9 (3^2) -> 16 (4^2) -> 25 (5^2) -> 36 -> 49 AND THEN 64. I know it would be tedious, perhaps just one intermediate step, but he sure skipped a lot. Then again, this manga doesn't fool around with filler, which I should be happy about.

I really hope he doesn't develop a special skill. As a tennis player and tennis fan, this is my favorite tennis manga largely because it's mainly realistic. Sure, some players have really great serves or slices or passing shots or drop volleys and manage their game so as to be able to utilize those strengths as much as possible, but mainly getting better isn't about special techniques or anything, it's just about doing the same things better, improving the fundamentals. So I really hope Baby Steps stays true to that.

If I'm comprehending the levels right, Takuma should be hitting his first serves in the 130's and 140's (mph) right now, like a young Roddick. If you think that fast a serve would only belong to someone with a high ranking, consider that Jack Sock (a promising 19 year old American) who regularly cranks his first serve up into the 130's, and has a nice forehand, decent movement and a decent backhand and he's been stuck in the top 400 hundred in the world for months.

Well ei-chan started well but the last page has me guessing. What has he realised?

I believe he will lose as well, but the important thing is Eichan learning something when he loses so he can use that in his next match.

Finally, I was thinking that this has to happen. He won't ever be a true power server with that height, but if he can get the power decent, then, combining that with great variety (which he has) great disguise (which is something he'll need to work on), great ball placement (which he'll also need to work on), and more spin on his slice and his second serves, then he could become a genuinely good spot server, sort of like a David Ferrer, but hopefully a bit better than that, perhaps a pint-sized Federer.

I'm glad he picked up on the power serve being useful. As good as he is with fooling people with his 9 serves, he can only get so far with it. He needs a powerful serve to make it to the nationals, and definitely in the international realm.

Y'know, it just occurred to me . . . Ei-chan will surely end up a pretty dashed good player, but for him the real action could be after he retires. That guy and his notebook is gonna be the most in demand coach in Japan.

Haha, another bit of gold from PLG. his tennis skills are more suited to coaching, for sure.

"He also let me know that clocks are still the in thing. That’s reassuring to me, as I was worried the fashion might have changed while I was gone. But no, he continues to point whenever he sees one, announcing to everyone who cares to listen that there is a clock. I agree to this as well, even if that particular clock happens to be, say, a thermometer.

There is an art to conversation, you see, and part of that art is the ability to occasionally let a trifling difference of opinion slide by without making a federal case out of it.

So he says, “Clock,” and I think, Okay. Fair enough. I see your point.

“Clock,” I agree."

Man, I can't wait to see Eichan's improvement. Stronger body, even more control, AND a new serve? The opponents won't know what him them.

Yeahhh, that's what we're talking about! Stomp 'im, Ei-chan!
As of ch 102 it's looking good and he hasn't even served yet.

I'm hoping that his opponent puts up a greater fight. I don't think he'll be able to truly challenge Eichan but I think his opponent is a bit too excited/nervous, and hasn't shown his real ability yet.

Absolute demolition of his opponent. And better yet, as his onlookers noted, that's not the best he's got. Man am I pumped for a match that will push him to the limit again.

On a side note: what a disgusting serve! Disgusting as in awesome that is.
