Consider that it's set in 1835 and during that time, children are considered adults at the age of 16(coming-of-age ceremony etc.), so it's not that unbelievable if they think more maturely... ...And there's a lot of girls marrying at age 12 so it's not that out of place. In the said setting(society+timeline) anyway~~
