For the Japanese side....
"I would like for you to come home as soon as possible."
= 私、あなたに今すぐにでも帰ってきてほしいって思ってるの。
私 = I
あなた = you
今すぐ = at once, immediately
帰ってきてほしい = want you to come home, essentially
思ってる = been thinking about [this] for some time.
About the polite line...
The word used to describe her まとも.
If you use jisho.org, you get
1: (Usually written using kana alone) the front;
2: honesty; uprightness; directness;
3: decency; normality
I think that Hiro is comparing Mom to Dad in the way they act. She handles the situation pretty well (etiquette-wise) and doesn't make any excuses or push away responsibility/blame. Indeed, we still don't really know much about the Mom's situation at this point in the story. Will be interesting to see what happens.
@ Evilnemesis
I wouldn't say that I'm bashing or hating on the mother, I just wanted to add my specculations about this interesting character because right now, she is very questionable! Just like you said, the mother reccently appeared and all of a sudden she says that she wants Mao to return. I just find that very hard to believe at the moment because it is sudden.
Maybe it was because of translation or my interpretation but when the mother said "I would like for you to come home" it gave me the impression that she was asserting what is best for Mao (I say insist maybe its too strong of a word?). She seems like she has a vision of how it will all work out but doesn't include Mao's input and says things like they want... her to come back (which doesn't ring true to my eyes). It's important for the mother to ask for Mao’s thoughts (even if she ends up running away) because it shows at least she cares and respects Mao's thoughts and decisions. Maybe they could also reach a compromise that way too.
You said that it's not the responsibility for the mother to fix the father-daughter issue, and that may be true, but the mother said that she wanted all of them to be a family and if she was sincere, she would need to build a relationship (and trust) with not only the father but the daughter as well and at least try to get them understand each other for this family to work at all. Admitting the father's issues would be important for Mao to understand her dad, ease the guilt, loneliness and fear about the things that happened and hope that their relationship will improve. Having the mother talk about this with Mao can also show her support for her and again her sincerity.
The relationship between the mother and daughter is still pretty vague but we still know to a degree, that she hadn't made an effort to either get involved in the father-daughter relationship or become close to Mao in the past. The mother is not to fully blame for this family situation, but she has stood by (I would assume) while such sad things happened when she became a member of the family and that deserves some blame.
I can see how the biological mother's opinions affecting Mao’s perspective could also affect how the narrative may portray the (step) mom in a certain light. The story could show a twist with more background on the (step) mother but for now given the situation and information, I am wary of her.
Like you were saying, it is considered "indecent" the Mao is living with an unmarried man in this society. I could see that it would be a motivation for the mother to suggest Mao to return. I am getting the impression though that the mother is using the suggestion of becoming a family again as an excuse to protect her own self interest (reputation). It’s a stretch but it’s a possibility as well since she is described as being surprisingly polite (possibly conservative as well?).
When I say "go out of her way" I didn't mean she should stalk Mao and surprise her. So far, the mother hasn't gone to any lengths to talk to Mao at all. Even their little talk was just a coincidence (or maybe not?). I think there are many ways to do this while respecting Mao's space. Like for instance, Mao's living expenses are handled by the father. The mother could come as well and ask about her/write her a letter/make her some snacks. She could also of course arrange a time to talk if it's okay with Mao. The important thing is to show she cares and doing it in a consistent way.
I agree with you that most of the damage is done but I think there’s potential for more. It will be interesting to see how this will be resolved. I don't think the father's manliness is at the heart of his problems but yeah, he needs to get his act together and not only think of himself.
Long post i knoooooooooooooow hahahahahahaha

@Evilnemesis
At least someone can tell. Taamo doesn't make any of her characters out to be 'bad.' All of them have their various reasons for things and I don't think she necessarily wants any of her characters to be hated. I only say it like this because a lot of times authors create characters that are made to make the readers angry and hate them forever until they're defeated or w/e.
My line of thought sort of abruptly died. weee
Lol wow all this step-mother bashing even though we have seen her like 2(?) times appear in this manga.
To me it didn't seem insincere, she also didn't "insist" as you've said at all, so I don't really know where that one came from.
I find also find it laughable "ask how mao feels". Mao is just like her father, when issues arise she runs and hides like a coward. Kids learn from their parents, she uses the same defense mechanism he uses to deal with things.
I also don't understand how it's her responsibility to say that her father has been distant towards her. Also, she did mention it to hiro that it was a problem and that they would work on it. She admitted it, but you just can't read between the lines.
She is definitely not to blame for anything, the only thing she's faulty about is not befriending Mao before the wedding, like a "trial" period time.
But even then, you must remember her mother was always telling Mao how it was her father's fault. It's entirely possible she still believes this even though she was the one who left her.
But this is japan, men and women don't live in the same household unless they are married. It's considered "indecent", although this has changed much in the younger generation it's still a prevalent attitude towards men and women relationships.
I also don't understand how "going out of her way" to start a relationship would work, if she does that she'll have to ambush mao when she comes to school and stuff like that. No teenager would like being stalked like this. And considering mao's personality she would just withdraw even more.
All in all, call me pessimistic but the damage has been done. Mao won't talk to her father and he won't talk to him, the bridge has been permanently cut in half. They didn't talk about their feelings for the longest time.
The real problem is mao's father should of manned up and told Mao her mother was a whore and that was it, but he's too much a beta to say anything. He's the epitome of beta japanese male.
i was really shocked when know the truth about Mao's mother..
She having sex with other man.. damn.. that was really hurt for her father.
He should kill him when he is still in the bed, rather than just talk "WHY?"
NEVER and I mean ever! try to start a relationship by lying! It always comes back to hurt you.
ahhhh I feel like the mother's suggestion of returning home is a trap and insincere. Like she's doing this out of propriety rather than wanting her to be apart of the family.
I mean she said that she and Mao's dad wanted her back but both haven't really shown this. Also just because she says that, doesn't mean she should insist Mao to return. The mom should ask about how Mao feels about it instead and make her feel comfortable to return.
She should first admit that her dad has been acting poorly towards Mao and help him deal with his issues (Giving Mao updates). Secondly, she is partly to blame for the situation too and an excuse does not fix the issue. She needs to go out of her way to start a relationship with Mao and help bridge the gap between father and daughter before welcoming her back. If Mao goes back now without these issues resolved, conflicts would drive her into a corner again.
YES, DAIKI! GET IN THERE!
not really a spoiler but I guess spoiler if you didn't read the latest chapter.
anyways, I'm kind of sick of this radical, mao, and hiro business. I wish it'd go a little faster with this b/c I'm annoyed every time I hear radial lie about the cellphone story since it's the only legitimate excuse she has to meet with Hiro.
Hiro's holding Croquette, I believe.
Oh man, this won't be pleasant for anybody. One of the good things about this manga though is that you can expect the drama to not be over dramatic.
http://www.batoto.net/read/_/170331/taiyou-no-ie_v5_ch20_by_maigo/16
Wait...is Croquette standing on one foot? I know it's leaning on Hiro and all but I don't think that's normal o O
Truly is it said in manga, when one complication closes another will open.
I dreaded this development even though I had a feeling it was going to happen.
Right on the bullseye!
Even if Mao's new mom finally sincerely wants Mao back, it sort of feels like it's too little, too late. And after seeing the flashback on how Mao was practically ignored while living with her parents I just can't see it working out, I'm not too sure about the mom yet but her dad will have to have a complete change of heart.
I just really hope this won't turn out to be the typical false sincerity that ends up with Mao giving them another chance only for it not to work out once again. I feel like Mao needs to reach some sort of closure with her family before being able to work out her feelings for Hiro or for Hiro to finally realize his own.
It'd be nice if they really were sincere but Mao still finds out she feels more at home with Hiro and maybe Hiro will realize how lonely he is and be a little selfish and ask Mao to return or something
.
Personally I don't agree with this. The only way I would, would be if I didn't trust Hiro's judgment about people. We know he hates Mao's dad-- and by his reaction after meeting Mom, he was expecting the mom to be just as much of a sleezebag as Dad is-- but she wasn't. I think that she actually is being sincere about how she feels.
And I mean, while she may seem cold or whatever-- I have a feeling she's just trying to be careful about expressing what she's trying to say. I mean, the whole situation was made awkward because of Dad, and how she only bothered to talk to Mao after they happened by each other.
Finally, I have a feeling Taamo values family, which is why she puts so much emphasis on trying to get Mao back with her family, but this is still an undeveloped opinion of mine. Would have to read more chapters to see what she does with all of this, I guess.
You know, I hadn't thought of it that way. But I didn't care--it just feels obvious to me that she'll be happiest with Hiro, so all these ideas about moving elsewhere, whether with her caring girl friend or one or more of her chilly and unparental parents, are just traps and delusions whatever the mom's intentions might be. She could have the best intentions but that doesn't mean she'd be good for Mao.
This chapter was good but frustrating; really had a one step forward, two steps back feel.
With her mom's black eyes and expressionless face, it's obvious that she's being insincere. There's probably some ulterior motive like maybe self-satisfaction or a work related issue.
I just wish it was more subtle because it felt sort of cheesy.
awww
Thanks for the update.
