Soon, it becomes apparent that people are not as simple as they may seem, and even Shizuka's guilt is uncertain. If the author was unable to write anymore he would have included some kind of notice at the last page.

However the manga got ended abruptly in that last chapter which basically suggests that it got axed.

some author don't even bother to included notice if he is not going to write anymore and not every author will bother writing a notice saying if it's ended or axed, i have seen it in a few manga they never put any notice. some is the author themself don't evem write it, i have seen it in some manga

to all those that say this manga is is axed, how the fuck do u even know if it's axed of not in the first place and do u even have proof that is is axed and not that the author can't continue writing story? if u guys can't be sure if it was axed stop saying it's axed get ur facts right first before saying it was axed as u all looking like fucking idiot

man no disrespect but for kimi no ichi maru or whatever you call it and hayeta the combat butler or mangas that have over 100 chaps and possiblay more chapters seem like they can go on forever they should just end it because its over but this manga had so much so much potential to just end like this

Was it actually axed, or did the author just stop?  Usually it is easy to see when or if a series got axed, but this was actually really good...

They ended this like that? That's horrible. It was an amazing manga!

this was a great manga and it got axed that is so much bull because once a great manga comes around it always gets dropped but some crappy as manga will go on for ever and ever
I don't get it...
HOW THE HECK DID SUCH A GREAT MANGA GET AXED??
While I agree that the ending really sucked, and that it is a shame the series got axed, I can't say that the author could have done much better with what they had to work with. It was either leave it open ended like this, (frustratingly) or randomly lay the blame on an existing or newly introduced character arbitrarily. I'm glad they went with "leave it open," since laying arbitrary blame often comes off very lamely, and involves the spontaneous invention of less than convincing 'evidence' of their guilt.
Here's the best I've come up with:
[spoiler] Minamida is either directly or indirectly responsible for the murder of the Aida family, and was trying to orchestrate something similar to what Hibiki tried to pull with the suicide circle: the hijacking of someone else's last request for his own purposes. Obviously the fact that his brother is STILL ALIVE after his Destiny:Dead time limit has passed would imply that there ARE ways to cheat the system. He's probably trying to ensure that his brother doesn't die. I definitely agree with manga09 on the point about Saaya also erasing her own memory, or at least the portion of it involving the Aida incident. Gou Aida's interference with Shizuka is also a shaky detail- we know nothing about what Shizuka was doing precisely when his father instructed him to stop: Perhaps Gou Aida DIDN'T know the murderer and was simply telling Shizuka to run away instead of fighting and getting killed? Or perhaps Shizuka had the upper hand and his father was horrified at the concept of his son becoming a murderer himself? There are any number of possible explanations. Even if Minamida was NOT involved in the murder, there isn't enough information to decisively accuse one of the existing characters.
Huh... guess I finally found a manga where Keima Katsuragi can finally say...

'WTF IS THIS ENDING?'
such an ambiguous ending, it is ambiguous whether my ambiguous theory is even ambiguously possible considering the ambiguousness of this ambiguous mystery story ambiguous ambiguous ambiguous...
........................brain hurts now, i need more clues than this...... brain hurts
You got the author's name, Yamaguchi Mikoto, and I'm sure that a google will tell you which publisher. Go to Japan/contact Japan and find him.
Ughh so confusing....
Wtf happened at the end?
he got tazored and it ended like WTF i agree lets go to the writers house an torture them to make us a good ending
like really you really call that a great ending
Like Like Like i can cry right now
Another case of japans axe-the-good-shit/continue-the-generic-shit syndrome.
@ losif: You forgot the the part where shizuka created his book.

The fact whether the book was completed or not before the murders was never revealed. Also Minamida recognizes Shizuka's intellect.

There are also a couple more issues that you missed.

The order of death was not clear except that Gou died before Hibiki (ch6 pg23) (the arrival of the shinigami is not always instantaeneous with death)(Also if it is a fact that Saaya did not lie then this proves that she arrived later after the murders because it makes it consistent that she did not know anything about the event)

The younger Minamida's first name was never mentioned.

The erasure of memory was never mentioned as something prohibited to shinigami's

Minamida and Shizuka's general appearance is very similar.
Who?Tell me who must i torture/threaten so i can meet with the mangaka and make him draw 10 more pages so i can satisfy my curiosity!!JUST TELL ME THE NAMES!
I brought this up to a friend and we thought hard about it. Our conclusions are that one of the requests must have been such a logical fallacy as to allow a rule contradiction while at the same time, not breaking them. The Chief is definitely at fault, Saaya is definitely guilty of something but the actual culprit, the one that murdered the Aida, is still unknown. So far we haven't been able to come up with any hypothesis which allows a 100% or even a 51% of possibilities of the culprit being identified.
I wish I knew if there was a way to edit comments.
Anyway, I'm thinking the position of the bodies at the Aida family's murder case is an important clue. I haven't detailed the order in which the Aida family died. Not sure if it's Tomoe, then Gou, then Hibiki or Gou, then Tomoe, then Hibiki or Gou, then Hibiki, then Tomoe.

I also fucking agree that the fucking Author should pull a fucking stunt like the fuck of Shizuka does to fucking publish a FUCKING ending to this fucking mess, FUCK!
@abos, although your deduction is good, it's wrong. The main point being that even if Shizuka weren't concious/willing to murder, IF Shizuka still commited the murder, he wouldn't be allowed to have a "last request". This was proven when Shizuka battled with the Chief Shinigami (Proven he didn't kill anyone) and as seen in the chapters were the twin evil spirit posess a girl, it's repeated that the girl must NOT be allowed to do the murder, implying she'd have to pay the consequences for the murder.

Now, although I don't have a concrete theory just yet, it is deductable that the cousin has some form of relation (Your theory about her wishing to become a shinigami is possible) and that the murder of the twin's mother is also a clue.

As I see it, it is important to have a timeline:

15 years ago: death of Aida Gou's cousin. Last request unknown. Aida Tomoe gets severe injuries, including leg incapacity and blindness.
13 years ago: death of Shiroha's and Kureha's mother. Planed by their father, Ichirou Houjou, alongside "Minamida".
10 years ago: Shinigami Saaya completes training in 6 months. First mission, Destiny: Dead of Minamida Azuma. Coma of Minamida Azuma. Last request: "Keep watch over whether or not I die." At this part, Minamida's younger brother was stuck in bed, with a weak constitution.
Saaya promises to "not lie" and to "never make a mistake", or she would send herself to hell.
9 months ago: murders of the Aida family. Only Aida Shizuka survives. Aida Tomoe's and Aida Gou's "last request" is not known. Aida Hibiki's last request is to "Inflict maximum punishment upon Shizuka!". Aida Shizuka's memories are erased, and a picture is taken of the scene, with him holding the murder weapon.
6 months ago - present: Aida Shizuka is sentenced to execution, but escapes. Murders of 7 people by Asami, including Shiroha. Murder of Kureha by Ichirou Houjou.
Incidents regarding Kuroneko, including him obtaining information on the Shinigami and the Shinigami-sama game, in which a girl named Sawako died. Minamida sends Shizuka the picture taken at the Aida family's murder scene. Minamida captures Shizuka.

Things I gathered so far:
Not sure whether or not Shinigami are allowed to commit murder. Chief Shinigami Ayame did say that it would be a simple task to kill Shizuka.
All of the Aida are ruled out to be the murderers.
The Houjo twins, Shiroha and Kureha, can't be the murderers.
Asami can't be the murderer, due to having a weak body at the time. Plus she didn't know Shizuka or Hibiki.
Minamida Azuma, in a coma for 10 years, can't be the murderer.
Gou's cousin, dead for 15 years, can't be the murderer.
Minamida and Ichirou Houjou, although they'd be very capable of the murders, they didn't know Shizuka, nor his family members.
Kuroneko, although capable of murder, it is mentioned at first that he didn't know Shizuka or Hibiki nor commited a murder before the Shinigami-sama game
Kuroneko's name is Murata Gorou.
Unnamed girl, referred to as "X", is a girl that is willing to kill for Minamida. Minamida says she's "one" of his pieces.
Shinigami Saaya was in charge of the Aida family's murder case. She LIKELY erased Shizuka's memories, and she granted a "last request" that COULD MEAN death for Aida.
From this and taking into account the incident in which Asami murdered 7 people, I deduce that a "last request" that can mean death is not punishable untill it causes said death. Either that or the Chief Shinigami Ayame is more involved than what can be seen.
Saaya is holding the secret to what happened at the Aida family's murder case. Something "she can't say."
Although stated as "ability unknown", Satsuki has the ability to erase memories, same as Saaya.
I haven't seen anywhere that says that a shinigami's prisoner is prohibited from murder. In fact, it is mentioned that prisoners can get involved in matters in which the Shinigami can't, precisely because they are not shinigami's.
Aida Gou said "Stop it Shizuka!".
Chief Shinigami Ayame can't access Shizuka's files.

Shinigami rules:
Shinigami are to preserve "order."
Contradictions are a "sin" for shinigami.
Shinigami must complete a "last request" to their maximum capabilities.
A "last request" can't grant "murder" or "resurrection".

Clue I'm missing: everything Saaya said, quoted exactly as in the story.
Doing a skim reading, I wasn't able to find all of Saaya's words. I could only find the part where she says that if the Aida brothers came close to finding the truth, it'd be a matter of just "erasing it again". I do remember she said that she didn't know anything, but an exact quote would be better.

This is as far as I got. Up to everyone interested in finding out the truth to find any mistakes/parts I forgot, add their own found facts or their own hypothesis.
Wait, what? NO, Fuck you, I won't use my brain, I read mangas to avoid exactly that.
Man the ending was confusing as hell, some has so much dialogue that you could not catch up
...What is this I don´t even... Just...No. This is wrong, I would´ve rather find out Godzilla was the mastermind behind it all than THIS ending. God help me if I ever find the one responsible for this ending IRL I swear I´m going to yell at him, roll over the floor in agony and cry helplessly at what he did with my hopes and expectations put in this manga during a whole year and a half!
It's interesting to leave the conclusion to readers as the crime mistery story. But, I don't like it if it has fantasy element in the story because it is possible for something impossible can happen.
Bad story, bad ending. Because of the supernatural powers and interference of the shinigami, pretty much every solution anyone can think of it automatically called into question.

The last clue isn't even a clue at all. There are so many possible scenarios where supernatural wishes (two no less!) are used to cause someone to be murdered that the case is literally unsolvable.
