this is definitely one of the best manga series that i've read. it's a great deviation from the other horror manga i've read that focuses only on urban legends; not to mention that the translations are spot-on and natural-sounding :) it takes the overdone zombie trope and does something completely new with it. the only complaint i have with it is its... what i've personally perceived as at least somewhat negative... attitude toward those not identifying as cisgender? while its recognition of trans people is wonderful, the misgendering and disrespect both oda's BROTHER and the (nonbinary? they said they were neither man nor woman) person received was never countered or made up for, or even really recognized as disrespectful :( it might be unrealistic for absolutely every character to respect their (if they're not actually the same person, as some have posited) respective gender identities, but it would have been nice to see someone use the right pronouns and stick up for the second person when that middle schooler insulted them... referring to the BROTHER'S transness as a "gender issue" makes it seem like there's something wrong with him or that he's just confused, which is wayyy dismissive and cissexist. if we're going to have trans representation in media (which we DEFINITELY should), we should make sure we're spreading not misinformation but awareness and acceptance. i realize that mr. hanazawa has won an award for his exploration of gender in a previous work, but that does not excuse the mistakes made here... of course, if in the original japanese version these said mistakes are not in/as egregious as what i've pointed out, and the true meaning has been lost in translation, then i believe that perhaps the translators and editors would benefit from research on the various trans identities and expressions.

No one would benefit from that. Please go back to tumblr, you special snowflake.

I'm thinking Iura was onto something. It may be possible to control the infection, as long as you are someone who can keep your shit together; it seems to be a trait that the "loner" types have in common, as these are the only types of people that we have seen entering the "awakened" state (Kurusu, Naked Emperor, Ezaki and Hiromi). Even Iura managed to maintain his sanity for a while, and Ezaki was doing just fine until he saw the archer girl's severed head.

Point taken but there is something thats been bugging me. Hiromi seemed to only turn after she got "bit" by the baby, and that didn't even pierce her skin. But Hideo got "bit" by his girlfriend but hasn't turned even in the slightest. (note both bites were done by infected persons with no teeth i.e. the baby and the gf breaking hers off) It seems like too much of a coincidence to have two people bitten in the exact same way but only thing I can conclude is Hideo might be a sort of patient zero or is naturally immune to the disease.

When will be the release of the next chapter #156? and the volume 14? I really like this manga.. I hope it doesn't go HIATUS :o

Just caught up to this recently and it's been a crazy ride.

I wonder if this will ever get an anime adaptation though.

There goes me 6 hours work and beauty sleep, gotta read the chapters~

Haven't read it all for now, but in ch144 this is not France, this is Belgium, Brussels specifically (right in front of the Royal Palace). But I got confused too (and I live in Paris!)

Wait what? The church he said he was in is Notre Dame de Lorette. Belgium has Notre Dame de Tournai

From the sounds of it, Hiromi...

Maybe anyways. It'd make sense considering.

well official release is at volume 8 right now here so they probably catch up next year and i get my shot from regular releases. ._. so good.

Nuuuuu, I’m already finished with the volume. I don’t wanna wait another nine months till the next one ;_; !

Oh, one other thing though, page 7 in chapter 152 seems to be out of place, no?

I want to understand, but my brain won't process this...

Japan. Also, what’s with the irreverent nickname?

hell, what are those tentacles?

possibly, but i think that its real, since the church flooded with those centipede thingies that were uber scary, and that's probably how the authors going to up the stakes

How the heck did I miss that >x< ?

Hiromi is teenaged. Hideo is probably in his thirties. Just. No. Eww.

You prude, you.

You should read Hero while listening to kenta-v.ez., Technorch, Usao, RoughSketch and such- this is my secret technique (romances and slice of life goes great with BM & power/speed/thrash metal).

Ehhhhh, if you say so ... I prefer Locust Toybox myself (something calmer like Sulky). In my opinion this fits the setting and general atmosphere better since these aren’t filled with that much hasty/fast/hyper action, actually, and are rather tranquil in a strange way despite all the carnage.

This manga is sooo fucking great, I can't get enough

There was a portion of time where the author was in Europe to accept an award (or maybe he was a guest, I don't recall.) During this time he must've been gathering reference material for the first part of volume 13.

As for the actual "setting" of the first part of volume 13,

Spoiler

Might just be a mistake on Hanazawa's part. It looks like the church he's in is in fact Notre Dame de La Chapelle, in Brussels (a bit far from the street he was previously, but not that much). There could be some confusion with the names.

That guy Jan was most probably bitten by his own son Marc, who was under 10, as implied by the phone conversation between Jan and Cécile. This is why Cécile cries: she understands those smallish bite marks mean her older child has turned, and soon her husband will as well.

Oh and that's definitely Brussels in Belgium, and not France.

The guy had several bite marks though, there's no way whatever bit him had teeth (there was no blood, not to say it wasn't his son... but if an eight year old bites you as hard as they can, you will bleed) - also the guy took awhile to turn (he walked around a least 2 blocks in the city and had a short conversation), remember when all those people were at the shrine? they were turning within seconds...

So it leads me to think Hideo may be immune too.

So society itself has completely crumbled, yet they're concerned about "breaking in" and "murdering?"

I want to understand, but my brain won't process this...

Well, Oda at least is clinging on to hope that society has not completely fallen, seeing as she's willing to bring Hiromi to a competent authority in Tokyo. Hideo on the other hand seems to be slowly accepting the fact that there's probably no going back.

possibly, but i think that its real, since the church flooded with those centipede thingies that were uber scary, and that's probably how the authors going to up the stakes

While Hanazawa is certainly no stranger to leaving his readers in total awe (go read Boys On The Run if you haven't), that would completely break some sort of implicit code he's established from the very start of this manga : characters who appear grotesque and out of place are always part of someone's hallucinations. Think Hideo's panic attacks, (and his imaginary friend to some degree) or Hiromi's perception of reality while she's infected.

I'm not buying this. I think he can up the stakes without resorting to this (like Kurusu et all confronting our hero in Tokyo).

Edit: after reading those final pages in the church a second time, I'm not so sure. Damn Hanazawa is toying with me again :)

The guy in france had exactly the same marks Hideo had after his toothless girlfriend bit him. (He even said it looked like he was bit by a baby - and with him not bleeding it leads me to think it was a toothless baby)

When the guy in France turned I was like "Hellll nawwww" - because Hideo did not even though they had the same bite marks

Hideo may be a hero yet

Mentally connected zobies... that's pretty cool idea.

But what about these guys in france?
