Oh, one more side note on the money thing:  One influential argument about the source of fiat money's value is that people with a monopoly on violence where you live (aka the government) insist you pay your taxes using it.  Since you can use it to pay taxes, it has value; since everyone needs some to pay their taxes with, it's worth something to them.

Things like Bitcoin are a problem for this position.  Those who hold it argue that things like Bitcoin are just bubbles which cannot last and at some point their value will evaporate like the value of tulips at the end of the Dutch tulip mania.  Even so, Bitcoins do have value right now.  I'd say that the "Taxes create fiat money value" position has a lot to it, but is not the only source of such value.  Maybe historically the most important, currently by far the  most dominant, and probably the most stable, but there are other possibilities.  And while "fiat currencies" issued by sources without significant coercive or at least monopoly power may be much more prone to have the illusion of value dissipate, it can happen to more normal currencies too, during economic crises or when the state power to enforce law and collect taxes is somehow destroyed.  So the difference between tax-based "fiat value" and value based on justifications closer to simple raw collective belief is maybe a matter of degree rather than kind.

Of course, one could argue that basing value on "ability to pay taxes with it (and only it)" is similar to commodity-based currency, it's just a different commodity--instead of being worth "one gallon of gasoline" a credit is worth "one increment towards not going to jail for tax evasion".

Money is weird.  Bringing this all back to the manga, this theory would mean Moldy, by issuing money, wants to set himself up as the government.  Appropriately sinister.  Muahaha!

That's a fine read, kudos to the scanlating crew!

Jackie Chan? Not enough fighting with furniture!

That was holding back. If they went full Jackie Chan, then they would use chairs, ladders and carry a baby. Jackie was invincible when carrying a baby and using chairs and ladders.

Jackie Chan? Not enough fighting with furniture!

Out of all the manga that have been written about a cat with a donut body in a post-apocalyptic world, Donyatsu definitely has the deepest content and strangest plot twists. I'm not sure that any of the other manga about a cat with a donut body in a post-apocalyptic world would have had the cojones to introduce this latest twist.

Was it the Blueberry cat who grabbed Shigeru's tail?

Weird that a pastry or whatever that cow is can produce milk, though. XD

That's 'cause she's a goddess.

I....what?! Oh no! Donyatsuuuu

That moldy really appears out of nowhere. Mysterious moldy...

The party was defeated

Game Over

That cow was adorable ;A;

It isn't. While it's true that something is only as valuable as what someone else is willing to pay for it, currency itself only has value because we believe it has value.

That was exactly my point.

And now we have a cow. XD
Any bets on what animals we'll see in food form next? And what food they'll be? Weird that a pastry or whatever that cow is can produce milk, though. XD

Not that I'm complaining. This manga makes no sense and I love it.

WHOO COW DONUTS

Ah, apocalypse/armageddon can't stop wonderful fluffy pancakes and the spirit of community . . . thanks to the self-proclaimed goddess of milk!

I love this manga.

I've just learned something valuable this chapter:

FUCK TWINKIES, PANCAKES ARE HOW YOU SURVIVE THE APOCALYPSE

Robosaki > TROLOLOLOLOLOLO!

Last chapter: Monetary policy and creepy alien pastry impostors!

This chapter: The shame of defeat and hacking American military satellites!

What will happen next time? Literally no one knows! That's why we love this series!

It isn't. While it's true that something is only as valuable as what someone else is willing to pay for it, currency itself only has value because we believe it has value.

Shigeru, aka "the happy merchant", is spreading around what is called fiat currency: it has value because only because he says it has value, and is supposed to be able to enforce that value.

Donyatsu on the other hand is bartering (giving away crap) with real items that have (no) real value to the other party.

If a number of merchants came together and decided "this wad of paper is worth X items", then they would have a commodity-backed currency: it has value because it represents an item, not unlike a coupon to redeem a free back massage from your children.

This is more in the area of macroeconomics, not microeconomics.

It's a cat doughnut you guize!!! :D

Hmm, I find anti-Donyatsu's idea odd. Money has value only because we think it does. In the end, it's just scraps of paper. And in a post-apocalyptic society, what use are scraps of paper you can't even write on?

A dark Donyatsu dropping wads of bills and saying "money gives things value"  I think we are in for some commentary on society's obsession with wealth .   :)

Currency allows something to have a price, which is very different from value.

There you have it. Money is a "tool" with which we can identify general values of desirable goods and services. It does not inherently have any value other that what we give to it. It is essentially a generalized form of bartering.

Definitely agree that dark-Donya's going to have some interesting ideas on society. Seems like the aliens want to establish a new human-like society among the pastry-people.

So he just comes in like "Why hello thereTHIS IS HOW THINGS WORK."

And from what I can tell, he doesn't even have the common sense to name himself after a kind of pastry. What the hell.

I don't think the reverse-Donyatsu understands the way money works...

I really enjoy how this is comedic and yet incredibly serious in its implications at the same time.

Seeing Shigeru and Donyatsu's "memories" automatically made me think of Mirror Girl...

My laptop won't pull up past comments at the moment, but
