Finally got around to reading this since so many people say it's their favorite and recommend it highly. I am not impressed.

@Stixflash
Light would sacrifice his own family just for his plans. He manipulated many women and killed many people. He really doesn't care about justice, he care about being the god of the new world. He doesn't deserve a better end. So no fuck your logic and fuck your fanboyism.
I read this years ago in school.

Well, the MC messed up pretty bad, but then it was a teenager, and honestly I didn't really think about politics back then.

Good manga. :-)
Ending was a total disaster...it ruined the whole story. Actually story lost it charm from midwards, with repeated plotlines. I dont care what others says,Light Yagami sure deserved a better end and well he is mine favourite character from the series.
Akio u shouldnt look too much into what he writes. He just writes what he doenst like about the manga. Not that theres anything bad about doing that.
Purple library guy are you a teacher by any chance? I often read your comments, and tend to view manga that I just finished reading in a different light. And now that I think about it, it does seem stupid that Light, with all of that power, targeted criminals with petty crimes.

You held my attention for the first two paragraphs of your rant, but by the end I was thinking that what you just described sounded like wishful thinking, and you totally derailed yourself from the manga's storyline.

This is a Japanese magna we're talking about. Nothing more nothing less. The story takes place in Japan, because it's targeted at the Japanese market. If the author were to add to his storyline everything you just mentioned it would lose its interest. He'll have to turn facts, names, and faces into fictional characters, that way it would be more or less controversial, but will anyone know what he's going on about. Many people don't know or don't care about the problems of the world. Many have to deal with their own to care about what's going on their own backyards.

The story focuses on one closed-minded individual with a superiority complex. Those who think themselves superior, often are. He never acknowledge the power he had obtained, the guy could barely see past his own nose. Do you really think that this sort of person would of care for the troubles of the world? Do you think a man who fights for justice, would use such cowardice tactics, without weighing it on its conscience? The only thing he enjoyed was playing mind games. He was like a kid whose never held a gun in his life before, but thought that shooting it randomly was cool. What else could you have expected from such a character?

I didn't like it much. I didn't find a lot in terms of actual plot holes per se, as in like things that couldn't have happened that way. There may have been one or two cases where someone missed a tactical option or made a deductive leap that didn't seem plausible, but that stuff happens and it all got so convoluted it was hard to remember just who had what information anyway.
But broadly, the manga took an interesting premise (the power to kill people unstoppably and tracelessly; can it be used as a force for good?), gave it to a guy who was theoretically a genius, and had him use it in a way that was amazingly trivial, morally myopic, and strategically stupid. Spoilerizing long rant.
Spoiler
@Trepur: what plot holes did you find?
both the anime and manga were overrated imo.

I found multiple plot holes and the people who idolize L piss me off.
@Laurens D I'm pretty sure it's not important because Tsugumi Ohba is trying to show from the cult is that people have already idolized Kira as God rather than a person. The girl was just there to confuse you from the his point of view.
A excellent question. Who would you kill? Would it make the world better? Is it right to kill?
Still, nothing can beat the manga. also i wonder who that girl was in the end!
The anime was insane just like the manga. Definetely recommended.
